Straight Men and Fashion

These two should never be mixed…unless you are metro-sexual. I really would only listen to fashion advise from another woman or a gay man. If a straight man tells you one day you dress like a 40 year old, the next a 15 year old, and another your age, what are you suppose think? Several thoughts pop into my head.
-He’s giving you a complement
- He’s attempting to insult you (great burn there, big guy)
-He wishes he could be more like you (closet gay man)
-He wishes his wife could dress like you (please see first thought)
Men struggle with matching. I could walk down the hall at work and see dozens of guys sporting a brown belt with black shoes. Or wearing pin stripe pants with a printed top (very disturbing). Guys also wears jeans or khaki shorts 4 to 5 times before washing. Some, I hate to admit it, still wear clip on ties. That being said…guys have NO room to categorize my outfits. The only comments a guy should say are “You look good honey.” or “Wow, you look stunning!” Men should just stick with shooting guns and watching sports…leave the “looking good” part up to us.

I agree that a straight guy usually have poor fashion sense. And I must admit I am one of those.

About this line from above: “If a straight man tells you one day you dress like a 40 year old, the next a 15 year old, and another your age, what are you suppose think?”

What the heck are you talking about? What straight men do you talk to? Toddlers? Please. Give us a break. I may not be a fashion whore like some, but I am no Billy Bob from the sticks either.

It isn’t hard to learn how to dress. I listened to my wife. After I retired from the Navy I had to learn how to wear something other than a flight suit or pre-determined uniform set. For the first couple of years I was asking almost every morning what went together. After a while it became very easy to dress myself (even in my forties) without referring to the fashion merchandise and design major I married.

I am a business developer with a big company and it amazes me to see how some people leave the house in the morning. Here are a few of the things that baffle me:

-Not wearing a t-shirt under a dress shirt (especially a white one)

    - wearing a button down shirt with a double breasted suit

-having a $500 dollar suit (or more) on and wearing casual shoes

-not ironing or professionally pressing a dress shirt (sorry, no-iron shirts aren’t what they claim to be)

-not polishing your shoes. Yes, I am retired Navy but shined shoes make a difference.

-Like you said, belts not matching the shoes

-socks that are not an extension of the color of your pants

Well, the list goes on….not everyone is lucky enough to marry a fashion merchandising and design major. I am just glad I did.

While I whole-heartedly agree with you on the fact that some straight men are fashion-retards, there are also some who know what their doing. I came to NYC thinking like a Cali girl, only gay men can dress me. But soon realized that straight men, to can be fashion plates. It’s an amazing concept honey. Great post!

I just have to comment on the part where you said “Guys also wears jeans or khaki shorts 4 to 5 times before washing.” As far as jeans are concerned that is fairly acceptable for the most part. Your premium denim should NOT be washed more than once a month and never dried. With of COURSE the obvious exception of spilling something, or aquiring some unknown icky from say a bus seat. Then of course the wash cycle can be broken. As far as khakis are concerned they should just not be purchased… ever, for any reason what so ever. And just in case anyone is wondering YES I am a card carrying gay and have been properly trained and licensed to be dispensing this fashion advice.
