This is a Near-Blog

No offense to a recent commenter, but this must be said. Let’s break down the phrase “near-miss”. If you nearly missed something…you didn’t really miss it at all did you? You either miss it or you hit it…those are the only two ways it can go. Nearly missing something, almost missing something, coming close to missing something…it’s all the same. YOU STILL DIDN’T MISS IT!!!

So the part that really pisses me off…According to Wiki, the definition of a “near-miss” is: A near miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, or damage - but had the potential to do so. How is that a near miss??? YOU DID MISS! ARGHHH.

Well, when I was working offshore, we had to fill out near-miss reports if someone almost got injured. Let’s say your working on a barge, and a cable breaks on a crane, and a load of steel comes crashing down and nearly kills “Joey”. We would have to fill out a “near-miss” form, and bring it up in safety meetings.

I am without a doubt the one that said “near-miss” and it was in reference to a comment I made about coming close to hitting a deer. Where I live ,(northeastern Ca.)there is a long standing joke in this area about “near-misses” People who get in accidents around here are always saying “I almost hit a deer, or I swerved into a tree to keep from hitting a deer” etc. Well our local law enforcement started using the phrase “near-miss and/or near-hit” as a sarcastic way of speaking about a defendant with whom was trying to save themselves by using the proverbial “Well I swerved because I would have hit a deer” defense. That is why I wrote near-miss in quotation marks. It was wrong on my part to assume everyone would understand that. Near-Miss is like saying I might be pregnant. You either are or your not. There is no middle ground!

I think the term near miss implies that, yes, it did miss, but barely… in other words, the “near” refers to how close something came to hitting, proximity wise, yet still managed to miss. Anyway, I feel like a total geek for even giving a real answer to this post… it was a rant, and rants shouldn’t be questioned. :)

Shouldn’t the opposite be a “Far- Hit. That would be where you try to miss something but hit it anyway.
Guards at prisons could use this one when thay shoot an “escapee”.They obviously being the escapers…….then again maybe not.
